Pharmaceutical Technology Assessment for Managed Care: Current Practice and Suggestions for Improvement
Powerful pharmaceuticals are of increasing clinical and economic importance to managed care organizations, which are often responsible for managing and paying for the increasing costs of pharmaceuticals. This creates an incentive for them to go beyond a focus on clinical effectiveness and safety to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of new drugs. This report describes the processes by which managed care organizations evaluate pharmaceutical technologies and suggests pathways for organizing improvement. It reviews current evaluation procedures, provides a framework for future evaluations, introduces evaluation approaches, and annotates resources for further research on each topic covered. The report finds that most managed care organizations have internal procedures for assessing new pharmaceutical technologies, but their medical directors commonly believe these procedures to be less rigorous and less systematic than are desirable. The decisionmaking framework outlined in the report and t… More >>
Processed Lives: Gender and Technology in Everyday Life
No description availableProcessed Lives focuses on technology’s interaction with the social concept of gender. Much of the book deals with the technology of cyberspace–not surprising, given the subtitle’s pointed reference to everyday life, which for most people concerned with cyber matters means something to do with the Internet. For example, the editors chose Nina Wakeford’s essay on feminist networking and interaction on the World Wide Web, as well as excerpts from videos produced by teenage girls in a gender and technology workshop. Although the emphasis is on online interactions, all forms of technology are fair game. Judith Halberstam’s insights into the effects of public bathrooms on gender views will certainly raise eyebrows as it raises questions. Other essays take on embryonic fertilization, surveillance systems, UFOs and “the new technologies of race.” A group calling itself the Barbie Liberation Organization does some home transplant surgery between G.I…. Eldercare Technology for Clinical Practitioners
The proportion of the world’s population of individuals over the age of 60 is expected to double to 20% by 2030. This change in the demographic, and its potential economic impact on industrialized nations has prompted active research in automated systems for functional and health status monitoring and assistance, enabled by recent technological advancement. Eldercare Technology: A Handbook for Practitioners addresses technologies targeted at the assessment, early detection and the mitigation of common geriatric conditions including decline in functional abilities, gait, mobility, sleep disturbance, vision impairment, hearing loss, falls, and cognitive decline. This book not only describes the state of both embedded and wearable technologies, including technologies under research and on the brink of translation into products, but also focuses on research showing the potential utility of these technologies in the field. Eldercare Technology: A Handbook for Practitioners comes at a time… More >>

New Narratives in Eighteenth-Century Chemistry: Contributions from the First Francis Bacon Workshop, 21-23 April 2005, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California
The eighteenth century has long been considered critical for the development of modern chemistry, yet many crucial features of the period remain largely unknown or unexplored, for general accounts–often built around Lavoisier–have remained quite selective. This volume presents new approaches and topics in an attempt to build a richer, fuller, more complex view of chemical work during the period. Themes include “late-phase” alchemy, professionalization, chemical education, and the links and relations between chemistry and pharmacy, medicine, agriculture, and geology…. More >>

Multifunctional Pharmaceutical Nanocarriers
Various pharmaceutical nanocarriers, such as nanospheres, nanocapsules, liposomes, micelles, cell ghosts, lipoproteins and some others are widely used for experimental (and already clinical) delivery of therapeutic and diagnostic agents. The use of nanoparticulate pharmaceutical carriers to enhance the in vivo efficiency of many drugs well established itself over the past decade both in pharmaceutical research and clinical setting. Looking into the future of the field of drug delivery, we have to think about the development of the next generation of pharmaceutical nanocarriers combining the whole variety of properties and allowing for the simultaneous performance of multiple functions. Surface modification of pharmaceutical carriers is often used to control their properties in a desirable fashion and make them to simultaneously perform several different functions. This book is all about these futuristic multifunctional medicines. Multifunctional Pharmaceutical Nanocarriers intends to b… More >>
