Currently, the field of information systems technology is rapidly extending into several dimensions. There is the semantic dimension (including object orientation, data deduction and extended knowledge representation schemes), there is improved systems integration, and there are new tools. All these extensions aim to provide semantically richer and better engineered information systems that allow for more adequate and complete representations and thus extend the effective use of database technology to a wider class of applications. Database researchers and developers, whether they are committed to application or to system construction, are convinced that next-generation information system technology will be heavily determined by a handful of new concepts that they have to understand and work out in detail now. This volume concentrates on the following topics: – Extended data types and data models, database programming languages; – Rule-based data deduction, expert systems, knowledge ba… More >>

For everyone concerned with the technology and application of metals and alloys and with the development of new metallic materials, a detailed knowledge of phase equilibria is indispensable. Also, information on the thermodynamical and crystallographical data of the systems under investigation is essential, and often metastable crystalline phases as well as quasicrystalline or amorphous alloys are of interest. Volume IV/5 therefore presents all these data. Because of the large amount available of experimental evidence and thermochemical calculations, a presentation in one volume, as it was realized several decades ago in the widely used book of M. Hansen “Aufbau der Zweistoff-Legierungen” proved to be impossible. So volume IV/5 had to be divided into several subvolumes which cover – in alphabetical order – all binary systems of importance. Subvolume IV/5c, the third of the series, deals… More >>

The expansion and popularity of the Internet, along with the addition of wireless data functionality to wireless networks, has also contributed greatly to the growth of the wireless industry. In fact, the anticipated consumer demand for high bandwidth wireless data is commonly seen as the driving force behind current network upgrades and expansions. The number and types of companies aggressively investing in wireless technologies illustrate the importance of wireless data. Non-traditional telecommunications companies such as Cisco Systems, Intel, Microsoft, 3Com, and other professional services companies, are investing heavily in wireless product development and many have formed partnerships with wireless infrastructure manufacturers to help deliver wireless data services seamlessly to consumers. Written by a respected author this self-contained overview of wireless date technologies will provide a highly sought after technical reference to all those working within the main areas of W… More >>

This book gives an overview of the numerical data analysis and signal treatment techniques that are used in chromatography and related separation techniques. Emphasis is given to the description of the symmetrical and asymmetrical chromatographic peak shape models. Both theoretical and empirical models are discussed. The fundamentals of data acquisition, types and effect of baseline noise, and methods of improving the signal-to-noise ratio (either in time or in frequency and wavelet domain) are thoroughly discussed. Resolution enhancement techniques, such as curve fitting, deconvolution by Fourier and wavelet transforms, iterative deconvolution, Kalman filtering and multivariate methods of curve resolution are all discussed with several chromatographic examples. Quantitative analysis by peak area of peak height measurement, the precision and accuracy of the quantitation of stand-alone or overlapping and symmetrical or asymmetrical peaks are treated. In a separate chapter, guidelines are… More >>

High-Performance Data Network Design contains comprehensive coverage of network design, performance, and availability. Tony Kenyon provides the tools to solve medium- to large-scale data network design problems from the ground up. He lays out a practical and systematic approach that integrates network planning, research, design, and deployment, using state-of-the-art techniques in performance analysis, cost analysis, simulation, and topology modeling.
The proliferation and complexity of data networks today is challenging our ability to design and manage them effectively. A new generation of Internet, e-commerce, and multimedia applications has changed traditional assumptions on traffic dynamics, and demands tight quality of service and security guarantees. These issues, combined with the economics of moving large traffic volumes across international backbones, mean that the demands placed on network designers, planners, and managers are now greater than ever before. High-Perform… More >>

This text provides a solid, thorough overview of the field of data communications and networking. Beginning with the basics of a two-point communications link, it includes hardware and protocol standards at all levels of the open systems (OSI) communications model. Each chapter features an explanation of acronyms, making it easy for students to learn the terms unique to this field. Complete network coverage begins with LANs like Ethernet and token ring. It goes on to include ATM, FDDI, TCP/IP, frame relay, satellite and wireless communications, Internet structure and use, and network security. This text is well suited for students at two-year associate and four-year bachelor’s institutions with electronic engineering technology and electronic technician curriculums…. More >>

There are many data communications titles covering design, installation, etc, but almost none that specifically focus on industrial networks, which are an essential part of the day-to-day work of industrial control systems engineers, and the main focus of an increasingly large group of network specialists.
The focus of this book makes it uniquely relevant to control engineers and network designers working in this area. The industrial application of networking is explored in terms of design, installation and troubleshooting, building the skills required to identify, prevent and fix common industrial data communications problems – both at the design stage and in the maintenance phase.
The focus of this book is ‘outside the box’. The emphasis goes beyond typical communications issues and theory to provide the necessary toolkit of knowledge to solve industrial communications problems covering RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, Fieldbus, DeviceNet, Ethernet and TCP/IP. The idea of the bo… More >>
