Improvement of buildings’ Structural Quality by New Technologies
A number of relatively new technologies, such as Enterprise Resource Planning systems, the Internet and intranets, have entered the organizational landscape. These technologies have not only enabled a wide range of social and organizational transformations, but have also challenged much of the received wisdom that operates in academic and industrial discourses. This book attempts to capture some of these strands by discussing the social and organizational issues surrounding the implementation and use of these new technologies in organizational processes. Some of the contributions are critical and reflexive by nature, while others offer rich insights through the analysis of cases. The book represents a wide scope of traditions of thought, as well as research approaches, in addressing these emerging issues.
A number of practical and theoretical topics are discussed in detail, including: Implementation of ERP; Electronic commerce; Intranet implementation; The management of stand… More >>

Among the vast literature on contemporary reproductive technologies, Prosthetic Bodies stands out in its effective combination of insights, methods, and theories from the history of medicine, constructivist science and technology studies, and feminist theory. The double focus on IVF and related techniques, and fetal treatment and surgery, enables the identification of debatable tendencies within today’s reproductive medicine: the translation of ever more medical problems basically unrelated to women’s own reproductive health – and, in the case of fetal diagnosis and treatment, sometimes formerly even unrelated to reproduction as such – into medical indications for invasive, often highly experimental interventions in women’s bodies. The analyses show how, through the operations and workings of reproductive technologies themselves, as well as a variety of discursive mechanisms within scientific language, today’s recasting of men’s fertility problems and children’s congenital anomalies as… More >>
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Technologies for E-Services, TES 2003, held in Berlin, Germany, in September 2003 in conjunction with VLDB 2003.
The 16 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. Among the topics addressed are current issues on various aspects of e-services, in particular Web services, service composition, service aggregation, service integration, cooperative process control, business process modeling, DAML-S, scalable Web services, shared Web services, context-aware services, and location-based services. Radiologists have joined their clinical colleagues in the quest to detect breast cancer as early as possible, well before potentially lethal metastases develop. This article reviews the value and limitations of mammography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and other imaging techniques. In addition, Dr Samuels discusses terminology used in breast imaging reports and reviews interventional procedures.

Several long-term trends in technology evolution have become apparent since these symposia began in 1989. Earlier presenters more frequently discussed treatment methods involving harsh and extensive human intervention. As the symposia have continued, the number of presentations describing extremely harsh and expensive treatment technologies have gradually been supplanted by more subtle and gentler methods. Such methods include subsurface-engineered barriers, phytoremediation, and bioremediation.
Nineteen manuscripts were selected for inclusion in this volume, based upon peer review, scientific merit, the editors’ perceptions of lasting value or innovative features, and the general applicability of either the technology itself or the scientific methods and scholarly details provided by the authors. General topics include: soil treatment, groundwater treatment, and radioactive waste treatment.Several long-term trends in technology evolution have become apparent since these symposia… More >>

The Internet confronts IT researchers, system designers, and application developers with completely new challenges and, as a fascinating new computing paradigm, agent technology has recently attracted broad interest and strong hopes for shaping the future information society. This monograph-like anthology is the first systematic guide to models and enabling technologies for the coordination of intelligent agents on the Internet and respective applications. The Internet confronts IT researchers, system designers, and application developers with completely new challenges and, as a fascinating new computing paradigm, agent technology has recently attracted broad interest and strong hopes for shaping the future information society. Coordination of Internet Agents: Models, Technologies, and Applications
This book discusses the implications of new information
technologies and cognitive psychology for mathematical
problem solving research and practice.Based on a NATO
Advanced Research Workshop held in Portugal in 1991, it
offers both empirical research and theoretical papers.
The book includes a thorough discussion on the nature and
purpose of problem solving as a mathematical activity,
providing a view of the importance of complementary
activities such as investigations, conjecturing and problem
posing. It focuses on cognitive processes, instruction,
classroom processes, and the teacher’s role, and contains
new assessment and teacher education proposals.
At a time of important reform movements, when emphasis is
put on the role of new information technologies, the book
provides an up-to-date view of the developmental work being
done on computerized learning environments in the discipline
of mathematics, as w… More >>
Mathematical Problem Solving and New Information Technologies: Research in Contexts of Practice
Networking Infrastructure for Pervasive Computing: Enabling Technologies & Systems is a comprehensive guide to tomorrow’s world of ubiquitous computing where users can access and manipulate information from everywhere at all times.
The emphasis is on networking, systems and standards rather than detailed physical implementation. Addressed are many technical obstacles, such as, connectivity, levels of service, performance, and reliability and fairness. The authors also describe the existing enabling off-the-shelf technologies and its underlying infrastructure known as pervasive networking (PervNet). PervNet ties different sets of smart nodes together enabling them to communicate with each other to provide pervasive computing services to users. Throughout the book, important issues related to scalability, transparency, security, energy management, QoS provisioning, fault tolerance, and disconnected operations are discussed.
