41GKiV%2BxYxL. SL160 Technology Transfer: From Invention to Innovation: Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop

Technology transfer has expanded rapidly over the past 20 years in Western Europe, North America and the Pacific Rim. It has been estimated that some 50% of new products and processes will originate outside the primary developer; academic and other research institutions are obvious sources of much of this new technology.
In the NATO Co-operating countries, however, technology transfer is in its infancy; it is crucial for wealth creation and improvement in the quality of life that this mechanism is developed. The papers selected for inclusion in this book discuss issues related to the development of technology transfer in NATO Co-operating countries. The book identifies crucial research issues for science and technology policy researchers and, as a conclusion, offers some policy recommendations. The authors are drawn from NATO and Co-operating partner countries, from other parts of the world, and from international organisations. The focus of the book is on the institutional fram… More >>

41ntvaMmhjL. SL160 A Macro Perspective on Technology Transfer

Dr. Reddy points out that the key to economic success, particularly for the less developed countries of the world, is technology–but only when properly applied. Despite years of help through technology transfer, however, many LDCs are still improverished. This leads him to conclude that either the wrong technologies were transferred or the right ones were not transferred. His book thus focuses on ways in which LDCs can improve their economic growth through technology transfer, arguing that it is the assimilation of technology into their socioeconomic and cultural structures that is critical to their economic development, not the indiscriminate borrowing from advanced nations. In doing so, Dr. Reddy presents a behavioral model which proves that technology absorption is just as–if not more–important than a simple transfer process. A challenging, research-based discussion for academics in economics, business, sociology, marketing, and management, and for business and government policym… More >>

51cKC5i%2BagL. SL160 Success Strategies and Knowledge Transfer in Cross Border

Success Strategies and Knowledge Transfer in Cross-Border Consulting Operations analyzes the international operations of consulting firms. Apart from developing a theoretical framework which differs from traditional theories about international trade, the main issues analyzed in this book are: 1) Success determinants when tendering for international consulting contracts; 2) The choice between exports, acquisition of a local firm or establishing a Greenfield office when entering foreign markets; 3) The extent and nature of knowledge transfer to emerging markets; 4) The role of development agencies in international consulting projects; 5) The trend towards, and consequences of, more management services included in international projects; 6) The effects on competition when state-owned consulting firms are allowed to operate in the international market. The empirical analysis of these issues is based on a unique database of individual tender documents which Swedish consultin… More >>

51eFHnfy55L. SL160 Monitoring and Controlling the International Transfer of Technology

The United States is a net exporter of technology and technical knowledge. Despite fears that this outflow of technology is costly to U.S. taxpayers, it would be impractical to institute a government-wide system for monitoring and restricting overseas technology transfers. First, a review of the economic effects of technology transfer showed that it is not possible to estimate accurately the financial effect on the United States of the international transfer of government-sponsored technology. Moreover, the methods of transfer that might be monitored or restricted are also sources of the valuable, high domestic societal return to government investments in research and development. Finally, government agencies do not see international technology transfer issues as central to their missions and are likely to see new requirements as constraints on their ability to carry out their missions. The authors thus recommend no major policy shifts but do suggest some changes in existing policy tha… More >>

514kJHJGsAL. SL160 Strengthening the Grid: Effect of High Temperature Superconducting Power Technologies on Reliability, Power Transfer Capacity and Energy Use.

The slow growth of power transmission systems relative to the large growth in demand for power has played a major role in higher electricity prices and reduced reliability in a number of areas across the United States in recent years. This book evaluates the potential of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power technologies to address existing problems with the U.S. electric power transmission grid, especially problems with transmission constraints. Among other findings, the authors conclude that HTS underground cables provide an attractive retrofit option for urban areas that have existing underground transmission circuits while avoiding the expense of new excavation to increase capacity. When operated at high utilization, HTS cables provide energy savings benefits as compared with conventional cables or conventional overhead lines per unit of power delivered. Whether these energy savings benefits lead to life-cycle cost savings depends on the cost of electricity and, in the case … More >>

41YPcBLcMyL. SL160 Barriers to International Technology Transfer

Most governments now recognise that effective technology transfer is vital to innovation and competitiveness, but the process by which ideas flow from universities to industry is complex. Several barriers can be identified: technological, cultural, legal and financial. Such problems have often been seen in isolation, but it is clear that the problem of encouraging successful transfer is complex, requiring an interdisciplinary approach. The collection of papers in this volume is deliberately diverse, offering perspectives from economics, sociology, science, engineering and public administration, drawn both from within and outside academic life, from those at the sharp end of technology licensing and the administration of government research programmes. The range of national backgrounds of the writers encompasses ten countries. Audience: Those seeking to sell and acquire new ideas, particularly across national boundaries; policy makers and strategic planners in business … More >>
