Handbook of Human Performance Technology, 3rd Edition
The first two editions of the Handbook of Human Performance Technology helped define the rapidly growing and vibrant field of human performance technology – a systematic approach to improving individual and organizational performance. Exhaustively researched, this comprehensive sourcebook not only updates key foundational chapters on organizational change, evaluation, instructional design, and motivation, but it also features breakthrough chapters on “performance technology in action” and addresses many new topics in the field, such as certification, Six Sigma, and communities of practice. Boasting fifty-five new chapters, contributors to this new edition comprise a veritable “who’s who” in the field of performance improvement, including Geary Rummler, Roger Kaufman, Ruth Clark, Allison Rossett, Margo Murray, Judith Hale, Dana and James Robinson, and many others. Added a class late – needed the book fast – had it in 2 days as promised!! Would order again.
Book interesting read – lots of info if you are interested in HPT
People who work in this field should find the chapters helpful. I like that many subjects are covered by experts in their particular areas. Each chapter covers a part of the spectrum and should be useful for people in human resources, performance improvement, training, and curriculum and instruction. I use it as a reference tool and often start here before going on to other sources to complete what I am looking for. I sometime read a chapter to gain a wider perspective on a subject I know little about. The contributors are well-known and most write in an acedemic style. The style m ight be off-putting to some who don’t often read acedemic journals. Even so, the content is very user-friendly and organized well.
It is expensive so make sure you need it before you purchase.
I bought this book as required text for a class and was very surprised when it showed up. Not being familiar with the subject I expected just a simple rundown of the key points. This thing is as big as any dictionary I have ever seen. So far it is an interesting read but I can’t imagine that I will finish the whole thing.
Like its previous editions, the third edition of the Handbook of Human Performance Technology is a “must have” reference for all performance improvement professionals and those seeking to systematically and systemically identify and remove barriers to individual and organizational performance. Unlike many books on the subject that offer the views of an individual or small group of authors, the Handbook’s fifty-five articles give the reader an opportunity to learn from the diverse experience of some of the best practitioners and academicians in the field.

As a trainer, Six Sigma Black Belt, Certified Performance Technologist, and Sr. manager for a leading BioTech firm whose job is to help my site adopt the tools, concepts and methods of HPT, Lean, Six Sigma, I use this reference all the time. Taking a “fieldbook” approach much like Peter Senge’s FIFTH DISCIPLINE and DANCE OF CHANGE fieldbooks, the HANDBOOK FOR HUMAN PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGY is THE “bible” in our field. Full of real world advice, insights, and helpful models and examples, don’t miss your chance to have the best reference around in your toolkit.
